Uddhav Thackeray tendered his resignation to the post of Chief Minister of Maharashtra minutes after the Supreme Court ruled that he must prove his majority tomorrow. “We respect the Supreme Court judgment. Democracy must be followed,” Uddhav said on an online address. He said he is also quitting as member of the legislative council.
Reduced to a strength of 15 in Shiv Sena Legislature Party of 56, Uddhav Thackeray offered to quit at the very beginning of the unprecedented political crisis. Shara Pawar the creator of the alliance persuaded him not to do it immediately. Now that the apex court ordered a trial of strength and everyone knows that Uddhav Thackery has no majority to prove, the resignation was the only course open to the chief minister.
Supreme Court has given Uddhav an opportunity to stay in power till July 11 when it is supposed to give its verdict on the question of disqualification of the rebel MLAs. But he chose not to stay on shamelessly. Led by Minister Eknath Shinde, 39 Shiv Sena MLAs chose to turn against their chief minister and go with the opposition BJP. Shinde claims to head the real Shiv Sena. He seeks to replace Uddhav as president of Shiv Sena. Former Chief Minister of the BJP Devendra Fadnavis is ready to form alternative government. Governor is all set to invite him to do so.
Uddhav made an emotional appeal twice to the rebels to return, but they were determined to join hands with the BJP.
