A cloudburst occurred near the holy cave shrine of Amarnath in Jammu and Kashmir in which five persons are believed to be killed. The cloudburst took place around 5.30 pm on Friday leading to a heavy discharge of water near the cave. The Indo-Tibetan Border Police have been rushed to the place for rescue operation after the torrential rain ceased. Cloudbrust means particularly heavy rain.
Amarnath yatra was temporarily halted on Tuesday due to bad weather report. The 43-day Amarnath yatra started on June 30 from the two base camps Nunwan-Pahalgam in South Kashmir’s Anantanag district. There was no yatra for two years due to Covid. It is supposed to end on August 11, the Raksha Bandhan Day. Over one lakh pilgrims have offered prayers at the cave shrine so far. Rescue operations were underway by the National Disaster Response Force and other agencies.
Tents including community kitchens were destroyed. Helicopters are being used to rescue people. The agencies undertaking operations say the situation is under control.
