GHMC Polls: Vote percentage revised upwards by SEC

Hyderabad: Telangana State Election Commission has revised the polling percentage in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) elections to 46.55 from 45.70 % as reported on Tuesday evening. After carefully calculating after the last entry of data was taken into consideration, the  voting percentage was revised by the SEC. The re-polling in Old Malakpet ward is under progress on Thursday. After the CPI candidate pointed our error in printing his symbol, the SEC had ordered a re-poll on Tuesday itself.

According to the data provided by the SEC, the 150 wards under GHMC jurisdiction have 74,12,601 electors. Out of them, as many as 34,50,331 exercised their right to vote on December 1 in 149 wards. There was no polling on that day in Old Malakpet (ward no. 26) . Of the 34,50,331 voters who exercised their franchise,  18,60,040 were males and 15,90,219 were females. 72 others also voted. This amounts to 48.17 % men and 44.9 % women have voted on Tuesday. Ramachandrapuram (ward 112) has recorded the highest voting at 67.71 % while the lowest polling was recorded at Yousufguda (ward 96) with 32.99 %.

Wards in Old City also record low turnout

Just like in new city, old city also witnessed dull polling on Tuesday. For instance, Santoshnagar’s record was 35.95 %. Wards like Kurmanguda, Talabchanchalam, Rein Bazaar and Patherghatti have recorded just over 40 percent. The polling percentage is comparable to 2009 and 2016 with a little variance. Floods, government’s apathy and the impression that Majlis would win anyway whether one voted for them or not were the reasons for low turnout in the old city.
