Bharath Bandh: From 11 am to 3 pm Tuesday

  • Farmers say their protests are not intended  to cause problems for common man
  • Necessities like fruits and vegetables supply to be affected
  • Protesting farmers request for non-violent support from people

New Delhi: The farmers’ protest against Centre’s new farm laws got support from all opposition parties for ‘Bharat bandh’ called by them on Dec 8th. As per the Bharatiya Kisan Union spokesperson Rakesh, bandh is to oppose few policies of the government on new farm laws. Due to the bandh, supply of necessities like fruits and vegetables may be halted in Delhi and rest of the country.

Bandh will start at 11am and close by 3pm as per the farmers’ unions which they term it as symbolic protest. Exemption for ambulances was given and weddings can go on and 11am means everyone can reach offices, said union leaders. They further added that protest will be peaceful and will continue in non -violent way.

Kejriwal supports farmers’ bandh  

Delhi CM Aravind Kejriwal extended full support to the protest of farmers against the new farm laws. “The demands made by farmers are valid and we support all demands of farmers. AAP is in support of them from the beginning. Though there was pressure from Delhi police to convert nine  stadiums into jails, I didn’t agree. Even I was pressurised,” said Kejirwal who reviewed arrangements for protesting farmers at Delhi-Haryana border on Monday.

AAP is serving farmers as “Sevadars’ and I am also doing duty as a volunteer for farmers who are in trouble, but not as CM, Kejriwal further added.

Five talks between the Centre  and farmers’ unions failed and sixth round of mediation is expected on Wednesday. Farmers are in full force against Centre demanding to scrap the laws, but Centre has offered only to do some peripheral changes  but will not roll back the laws.

TRS extends support for ‘Bharat Bandh

The farmers’ call for Bharat Bandh on Tuesday was supported by all the opposition parties.  Telangana Rastra Samithi (TRS) joined the protest by extending its support to the call given by various organisations related to farmers. TRS President and Chief Minister  K.Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) said that their party cadre and leaders will actively participate in the badnh and make it a success. It is well known that TRS did not support the new farm Bills in the Lok Sabha. MLC Kavitha felt that if Mandi structure is dismantled, there will be no alternative structure in the country and it will make farmer insecure.

This time the farmers’ union stood firm with a demand that the government should roll back the three farm laws enacted recently. Nearly 14 parties announced their support to the bandh. Congress party will hold protests at all districts and state headquarters according to party’s spokesperson Pawan Khera.

Bank Unions also joined hands with farmers and expressed solidarity to the protests. They requested centre to resolve the agitation at the earliest, Bank Unions felt that before enactment the government should have referred the Bills to select committee.
