Farmers’ Chakka jam: Only blockade of National highways, no Bharath Bandh

• National and State highways to be blocked by farmers
• It is between 12pm to 3pm only

New Delhi: In support of their demand to repeal the three new farm laws, a nationwide road blockade has been announced by protesting farmers in the name of “Chakka jam” on Saturday. There is a huge number of people on tractor trailers moving towards Ghazipur for past two days in support to Chakka jam.

For ignoring their demands in union budget
40 farmer unions for the last 79 days have been protesting against the farm laws which are described as ‘anti-farmers by Samyukta Kisan Morcha, a union headed by 40 unions under a single umbrella. They say that Central government ignored their demands in the Union Budget 2021 and in response to that, farmers have called for Chakka Jam, as decided by the farmers’ unions who are at Delhi border protesting against the three farm laws in chilled winter.

Emergency services to be allowed
Internet was banned by government on Feb 6th in surrounding areas of protest site and SKM directed protestors to give way to emergency and essential services like ambulances and school buses on Chakka Jam day.

Promise not to enter Delhi
Farmers Union said that is only national and state high way blockade and not ‘Bharath Bandh’ as fake news circulating in social media say. The scheduled timing for the protest is from 12 pm to 3 pm on Saturday. With farmers’ unions promising that they will not enter Delhi, police are making elaborate security arrangements keeping in view of the violence that took place on Republic day. They are also monitoring content on social media so that there will be no place for rumours.

Supported by Congress party
Protesting Farmers, for the first time, gave a call to a big event which was supported by Congress party. Party directed workers to participate in the programme and accused Centre of using an iron hand on farmers and not listening to them. Mainly, farmers from three States – Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh, are at Delhi border continuously for 80 days demanding the repeal of the three farm laws as they felt that these laws would pave way for dismantling MSP system. But Central Government rejected these claims and now farmers have come up with a different style of protest by giving a call to Chakka Jam in order to mount pressure on Centre.
