New Delhi: Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, senior most judge after the present chief justice Justice Sharad A Bobde has been appointed as the next chief justice of India. President Ramnath Kovind had signed the order on Wednesday appointing Justice NV Ramana as CJI with effect from 24 April 2021. Justice Ramana’s name was recommended by the outgoing to chief justice last week. Justice Bobde is to demit office on the 23rd. He will be second chief justice from Andhra Pradesh after Justice Subba Rao.
The appointment of Justice Ramana is a setback for YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, chief minister of Andhra , who wrote a controversial letter to the CJI complaining against Justice Ramana and the then chief justice of Andhra Pradesh High Court Justice Maheshwari. The chief justices of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana State high courts were subsequently transferred to small courts giving an impression that the transfers were on account of the CM’s letter. However, while recommending the name of Justice Ramana to the government, CJI Justice Bobde declared in a terse statement that the CM’s letter has been considered and found it lacking in any credible content.
Justice Ramana will take the oath as CJI on the 24th and he will have a longer tenure than many of the recent chief justices.
