Delhi: General Manoj Naravane has been appointed by President Ram Nath Kovind as Chief of Defence Staff in place of Gen. Bipin Rawat who was martyred on Wednesday. Gen. Naravane became the second CDS of India.
Born on 22 April 1960, Gen. Naravane was honoured with PVSM, AVSM, SM, VSM. He is currently serving as Chief of Army Staff (COAS) which position he took over from Gen. Bipin Rawat. He is 27 COAS before which he was serving as 40th Vice Chief of Army Staff (VCOAS). He was General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Eastern Command and General Officer Command-in-Chief of Army Training Command.
Gen. Navarane hails from Pune in Maharashtra. His father Mukund Navarane served Indian Air Force as an officer retiring in the rank of wing commander. His mother Sudha was an announcer in All India Radio. He had his early education in Pune. He also graduated from Defence Academy, Pune and Indian Military Academy in Dehradun. He did his masters in Defence Studies from University of Madras and his MPhil in Defence Management from Devi Ahilya Viswavidyalaya, Indore and pursued his PhD in defence and strategic studies from Punjab University at Patiala. He had also had a stint at Wellington.
Gen. Naravane’s wife Veen Naravane has been a teacher for 25 years. She is also the president of Army Wives Welfare Association. They have two daughters. Naravane likes yoga, painting and gardening.
