With the final day bonanza, India finished fourth in medal tally at the Commonwealth Games. It won four gold, one silver and one bronze medal on the last day of the games. India in all won 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze medals.
On Monday, PV Sindhu and Lakshya Sen have clinched the women’s and men’s singles titles in badminton. While India’s ace Sindhu had beaten Canada’s Michelle Li, Sen had triumphed over Malaysia’s Tze Yong. Sindhu said ‘this medal means a lot to me.’ She won bronze in 2014 and silver in 2018. It has been a gradual improvement in her skills. The badminton doubles players Chirag Shetty ans Satwiksairaj Rankireddy had overpowered England’s Ben Lane and Sean Vendy (21-15, 21-13) winning yet another gold in badminton. Achanta Sharath Kamal, a legend, clinched the fourth gold medal of the day when he had beaten England’s Liam Pitchford in Table Tennis final at 4-1. In TT men’s singles G Sathiyan won the bronze medal. But the men’s hockey team, which has been playing well in these games till then, lost very badly to Australia 0-7 and ended up with bronze.
In the medal tally, India was in the fifth position till Sunday evening. It was behind New Zealand which had 22 gold medals against India’s 20. With the last day’s rally, India gained four gold medals and surpassed New Zealand by scoring 22 gold medals while the Kiwis remained on 20 gold. The third place belonged to Canada which has 26 golds, four ahead of India. Australia is in number one position with 67 gold and England in the second place with 57 gold medals.
