Earlier there was no paper or pen to record knowledge. So it was recorded in mind in the form of rhythmic poetry. Rhythm helps in memorizing and does not allow unwanted changes. Thus memory was useful in transferring knowledge across generations.

After the availability of paper and print it was not necessary to memorize and knowledge was available in books in prose. Consequently memory became less important.
Today computer’s with Google made memory redundant. With the flick of a finger entire knowledge about anything is in our hand in our mobile.

Memory is almost a useless trait these days.
Developing ability to think is education. Our teachers should be made to realize this. Then Coaching Centres based on memorizing will disappear and there will be real education that can be applied for ease of living.
