New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi had kept his promise made to shuttle badminton champion PV Sindhu to have ice-cream with her when he hosted the Indian Olympic contingent at his residence for breakfast on Monday. He treated the Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra to ‘churma’ while he had ice-cream with shuttle star Sindhu. Modi promised Sindhu that he would have ice-cream with her if she wins a medal at Tokyo Olympics. After losing in semi-final, Sindhu came back into the game strongly beating China’s He Bing Jiao to win the bronze medal.
The men’s hockey team had won bronze medal winning over the other semi-final loser, Germany, at the Tokyo Games. The wrestling team had brought in two medals. The wrestling contingent had met the PM at his residence on Sunday. Wrestlers Ravi Dahia and Bajarang punia won bronze medals in men’s freestyle wrestling. Weight lifter Mirabai Chanu was the first Indian to win a medal at Tokyo when she took silver medal lifting 202 kg. Neeraj Chopra won the lone gold medal in men’s Javelin throw. In all, India won seven medal at Tokyo Olympics, the best performance so far at Olympics.
Sindhu’s father Ramana had remarked after the ace shuttler won her bronze that she would now have ice-cream with the prime minister as the latter promised her before her departure to Tokyo. True to his promise, Modi had spent some time with Chopra, Sindhu and others paying them compliments for the way they enhance India’s prestige.
