- Asks fans to understand and forgive
- Can’t campaign in pandemic
- Did not want to sound chivalrous
Chennai : Rajinikanth, the super star of Tamil cinema, has gone back again on the question of launching a political party. He has come this time very close to announcing the party’s name on December 31. However, he has issued a statement on Tuesday to declare that he is not going to join politics, after all. “With extreme sadness I say that I can’t enter politics. I alone know the pain I went thought while announcing the decision,” said Rajinikanth in a statement.
I will serve people sans politics
Rajini gave the surprise within two days of reaching Chennai from Hyderabad where he has spent a day in Apollo hospital where he joined complaining of fluctuating blood pressure levels. After stabilizing the BP levels the hospital discharged the super star. Then he left Begumpet airport by a special flight for Chennai. “Without entering electoral politics, I will serve the people. The decision of mine will disappoint my fans and people but please forgive me,” the statement said.

All set for a launch
About a fortnight ago, the super star appeared ready for the launch of his long awaited political party. He addressed the meeting of district level leaders of Rajini Makkal Manram a few weeks ago where he declared that they have to decide “now or never” to enter politics. He was supposed to announce the name of his party on December 31 and launch it on the birth anniversary of former chief minister MG Ramachandran, January 17. He promised to practise spiritual politics.
Expected to fill vacuum
Political observers felt that there is a clear vacuum in Tamil Nadu politics after the departure of mega politicians Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa. Kamal Hasan who is already in politics would not be able to fill the vacuum but Rajini would be ideal with his mass following. Kamal Haasan has a class following. The 70-year old Rajinikanth wrote a letter in Tamil which he posted on twitter.

It was a warning from God
“My hospitalization was like a warning from God. My campaign will impact health amid the pandemic. I thank office bearers for working with me,” Rajini said in his letter. He said he did not wish to sound chivalrous by stating that he would join politics despite my health concerns. He said he did not want to make a victim of his supporters. Popular and highly respected star, Rajini enjoys enormous following across the world. He is very popular in Japan and other Asian countries.
Speculations ended, but the cinema is not there
Rajini and Kamal Haasan were supposed to team up and fill the gap created by Karunanidhi and Jayalalithaa, the mega leaders of the DMK and the AIADMK respectively. In 1996, Rajinikanth’s comment that the State would go to dogs if the people voted for Jayalalithaa had a electrifying effect. People of Tamil Nadu gave a rude shock to Jayalalithaa by defeating her. Since then, it was believed that Rajini carries conviction with the people of Tamil Nadu and if and when he chose to enter politics, he is certain to make a mark. The events that took place in the last few weeks gave the impression that the long wait was over and Rajini was all set to launch his party. There was also a talk of Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan forming an alliance and coming to power. Now all that is behind us.
